The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
